PhD Scholarship – Circular Economy for Construction & Demolition Materials

欧洲杯开户PhD Scholarships ($27,596 pa.) are available for outstanding students to to carry out applied innovative materials research and work with academy, government and industry to study system innovation and develop new processes to enable the circular economy to be achieved in WA for at least the construction and demolition industry.


欧洲杯开户Western Australians generate more waste than people in other Australian states and territories while engaged in a vibrant lifestyle and prosperous economy. Construction and demolition (C&D) waste makes up around half of Western Australia’s waste stream and the material recovered for recycling is amongst the lowest in Australia and the developed world. The WA State Waste Strategy has a target of 80% recovery for reuse and recycling by 2030. How can this be achieved?

Recent innovative projects by DevelopmentWA, the WA State Government land development agency, in partnership with industry, have demonstrated that close to 100% of both construction and demolition wastes can be recovered directly for reuse and recycling. The PhD research will include a cost and sustainability benefit analysis of this approach considering current industry practice in WA and Australia and a worst-case scenario. What technical innovations and industry processes are necessary for these demonstration projects to become the mainstream?

This project provides an exciting opportunity to carry out applied innovative materials research and work with academy, government and industry to study system innovation and develop new processes to enable the circular economy to be achieved in WA for at least the construction and demolition industry. To enable a circular economy in the C&D industry all aspects must be initially considered in the research – sources, separation at source, processing, product development, producer responsibility, monitoring and evaluation.

Successful individuals will be given the opportunity to spend time with the industry partners sponsoring this project, to work toward their project objectives. The successful candidate will start the project by developing a detailed, industry relevant, research plan in collaboration with the project sponsors. This PhD scholarship opportunity is open to both domestic and international applicants.

Application criteria
  1. The successful candidate will have completed a Masters by research degree or an Honours degree (Australian H2A or H1, or equivalent) by June 2020.
  2. Experience in a relevant discipline (e.g. Engineering, environmental science, construction, project management).
  3. Well-developed interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary and collegial team.
  4. Demonstrate high levels of written and oral communication skills.
